In His Own Words

When I was asked to go and visit Kenya for Comic Relief, I thought I'd just toddle along and do my bit and that everything would then be OK. I think many people have the same attitude when they shell out a few quid on Red Nose Day – "I've done my bit, now everything will be OK." But it's much more complicated than that. I think we’ve all got to get a lot more involved.

The nomadic farmers of Wajir have a tough enough life when times are good. But in the last few years, thanks in part to climate change, they’ve suffered successive droughts during which all their livestock died and they were left destitute and on the brink of starvation.

Comic Relief money has helped provide food aid which has kept over 300,000 people alive. But the long term future is even more complicated: how can they adapt to face an uncertain future? Comic Relief-funded programmes are helping them to rebuild their lives, but what else can we do to help them prepare themselves for a future of almost inevitable further droughts? I don’t have the answers, but it’s important that we all ask the questions...
