Sarah-Jane’s Story

UK

Sarah-Jane

Sarah-Jane knows all about the damage that alcohol can do. When her dad died aged just 45 he had already spent most of his adult life battling an addiction to it.

"When my dad was sober he was really funny, he knew how to make me laugh and he always had a real twinkle in his eye,” says Sarah-Jane. “But when he was drinking he wasn't himself anymore. I knew he was harming his body and I hated seeing him like that."

Although she took on the responsibility of looking after him, Sarah-Jane found it hard to tell her friends and teachers about what was happening with her dad.

Luckily she didn’t have to cope alone. She was supported by a worker from a special project that uses money raised through Red Nose Day to help youngsters like Sarah-Jane.

Sadly, Sarah-Jane’s dad died quite suddenly and she never got the chance to say goodbye. Although she felt hurt and angry, having someone to talk to about how she’s was feeling was a huge support. That project helped her to build a relationship with her dad before he passed away, and she cherishes that relationship dearly now he’s gone.
