BBC Radio 3 Breaks World Kazoo Ensemble Record
15th Mar 2011
It’s famous for hosting some of the world’s best musicians, but yesterday the Royal Albert Hall witnessed a new kind of spectacular show. A star-studded kazoo band was joined by the entire audience as they buzzed their way into the record books with a new Guinness World Records title for the largest kazoo ensemble.
The buzzing BBC Radio 3 Big Red Nose Show broke the previous record of 3,861 people set in Sydney, Australia in 2009 by a mere 50 pairs of lips with 3,910 kazooists taking a deep breath to blast out Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries and the Dambusters March.
The onstage celebrity kazoo band included Katy Brand, Miranda Hart and Stephen Mangan. And, the Episodes star caught his breath after the performance to say:
“Being part of this record breaking kazoo ensemble is probably one of the highlights of my entire life – the fact that we now hold the Guinness World Record is exciting beyond words.”
The show also included even more breath-taking performances from violinist Nicola Benedetti, cellist Julian Lloyd Weber and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Johannes Wildner and Sue Perkins.
Not only did the entire ensemble raise the roof, they also raised buckets of cash, with 95% of ticket sales going to Comic Relief.
Anyone who wants to hear the thrilling attempt and exhilarating music can tune into BBC Radio 3 tomorrow night at 7pm.
